Livingroofs.org is a new organisation, born through the frustration of a lack of necessary policies and frameworks to establish green roofs that meet a diversity of environmental objectives in the UK. Primarily it has been established to act as an independent resource that will further the development of green roofs in the country. We hope that by doing this it will bring together and accommodate the various needs of that are involved, whether developers or local authority planners, ecologists or drainage engineers, growers or manufacturers, researchers and campaigners.

OUR KEY TARGETS FOR 2004–05 are:

ORGANISATION

  • Establish an inclusive management board.

  • Become a membership organisation.

  • Raise funds to ensure Livingroofs.org can function as a fully operational organisation.

  • Establish working relationships and links with other national green roof organisations throughout the world, sharing expertise, good practice and information.

INDUSTRY

  • Engage with the green roof industry organisations and begin working towards a code of conduct.

  • Look to build up appropriate seed banks for localities, regions and specific habitats appropriate to green roofs in partnership with other organisations.

GOVERNMENT

  • Approach the office of deputy prime minister to begin raising the profile of green roofs in terms of sustainable development and investigate funding.

  • Engage with Government departments to ensure that green roofs play a key role in their departmental Biodiversity Action Plans and sustainability targets.

PRIVATE SECTOR

  • Seek to establish a meeting with the major supermarkets/retailers regarding new builds and retrofitting.
