Future House London

The 7th annual RIBA exhibition of short-listed work by London architects features one completed row of residential buildings with green roofs, and designs for housing with a range of vegetated features. The focus on Future House is radical solutions to urban housing, and a number of winners were awarded at the launch of the exhibition by Griff Rhys-Jones and Mark Lawson on 16th July 2004.

The built houses are those at Gold Lane, Burnt Oak, north London, by Project 35, English and Konu Architect, designed for Notting Hill Housing Group, and completed in 2003. The green roofs are highlighted as a key feature.

The unbuilt designs include:

Hedge Houe in West Hampstead by Transient Studio
Sky-ZED at Wandsworth by Bill Dunster Architects & ZEDfactory Ltd.
Two houses in Dulwich by Hampson Williams
Future house at Poets Road by bere:architects
The Re-Used House by Cottrell & Vermeulen Architecture
Future House London by Markland Klaschka

Future House London features 40 schemes of built and unbuilt housing projects, chosen from over 100 submissions. These explore how architects in London are using their expertise to revitalise the city fabric. The exhibition is being held from 12th-29th July at City Hall, Queen's Walk, London SE1.

GROW

The Green Roof Water Recycling System, has won the CIWEM First World of Difference award supported by Binnie & Vetch. This is a prestigious national award from the Chartered Institute of Enviromental & Water Management.

The first prototype of GROW was researched at a rig built in 2001 at the Centre for Urban Pollution at Middlesex University, London. Associates included Ameco Ltd and Erisco-Bauder Ltd. The Green Roof is essentially a garden of low growing, flowering, native plants, whose roots can perform the same cleansing function as a reed bed. Grey water (used wash water collected from showers, sinks and baths) is treated as it flows through the plants root system. The treated water is safe to use for toilet flushing, cleansing public areas, and watering the garden. Other advantages of the Green Roof Water Recycling System:

  • Visual amenity
  • Absorption of dust particles
  • Low maintenance
  • Lower water bills
  • Green credentials for developers and planners

Installed as a single unit at roof top level, this system will require no extra land, something that makes some other external forms of water recycling an expensive option, especially in inner cities. The system would also be able to provide thermal insulation to buildings in winter and act as a cooling layer in summer

In 2002 the DTI awarded GROW a grant under its Partners in Inovation (Pii) scheme to carry out further research using a live source of grey water. The new GROW rig is being installed at the School of Water Science at Cranfield University and is connected to the student accomodation for the source of grey water.

GROW is also being developed in a kit form by Geberit UK.
