We see green roofs as building-integrated habitat. Working with other professionals and go-ahead clients we advise on the establishment of green roofs that work with the local environment; both the physical and ecological setting. We began advising on green roofs from the early 1990s working with the architects Architype Ltd on increasing the diversity of traditional turf roofs. We have been involved in several green roofs projects with them including the Diggers and Hedgehog housing schemes and the Horniman Museum, where the green roof was integrated into the building services design with the intention of providing extra insulation and evaporative cooling. We were the lead consultants for English Nature’s Research Report on Green Roofs (RR498) which we produced in collaboration with the eco urbanist landscape architects Studio Engleback. More recently, working with Buro Happold, we have been involved with designs for the London 2012 Olympic Park, and have been able to include proposals for many green roofs, including a 10,000m2 extensive roof on the Press Centre, designed to recreate habitat for wildlife associated with existing brownfield sites. We are currently working with green architects XCO2 on moss and turf roofs for eco-lodges in Pembrokeshire and two schools in Exeter with Grainge Architects, which will have Triassic pebble beds – not unlike some of the pebbly roofs in Basel, Switzerland.
