Type of Development

Designed as a low impact, low cost housing development in the Watling Estate Conservation area, a site was previously occupied by forty-five seriously vandalised and virtually derelict garages.

Reason for Green Roof

Planning requirement as the development was in a conservation area and overlooked by surrounding higher level properties.

Loose laid Sarnavap 2000 polyethylene vapour control layer.

SarnaTherm EPS-E CFC and HCFC Extruded polystyrene thermal insulation board from Kingspan Insulation Ltd.

Sarnafil TG66-15 Flexible Polyolefine single ply membrane loose laid with all overlaps hot air welded.  FLL approved for use without an additional root barrier.

SarnaLite roof lights.

Sarnafil AquaDrain 20mm recycled polyethylene drainage and protection board.

65mm of lightweight growing medium formulated to the suit the local environment.

Nature Mat® vegetation blanket consisting of a variety of flowering drought resistant sedum, succulents and mosses installed over the prepared growing medium for an ‘instant’ green roof.

Entire roof assembly, including the greening element, guaranteed by Sarnafil Ltd.

The first completed SarnaVert project in the UK, the project has received numerous awards including RIBA Housing Design Award (2002), Highly Commended RIBA Housing Design Award 2004, Winner of the federation of Black Housing Organisations (fBHO) Best Housing Design (2004),  Shortlisted Exhibitor ‘Future House London’, RIBA London, “20 of the Best” Housing Corporation, Featured Project ‘Urbio’ journal of urban biodiversity and human nature, English Nature, Featured Project ‘Inside-Out’, BBC London TV, October 2005, “Rehabilitar Hoy” (Rehabilitation Today) published by Monsa in 2006 & Winner The Civic Trust Award 2006.
